Foods to Avoid for Infants and Toddlers

Trying out new foods is a very exciting and engaging experience for both parents and the little one. Watching the expressions change on baby’s face as he or she tastes something new is an unforgettable moment. However, some foods can come with risks for little ones so in order to have a healthy and positive eating experience it is important to be careful about which foods you introduce when.

Cow or Soy Milk should be avoided at least till a baby’s first birthday. Most infants cannot digest cow or soy milk and it does not contain all the necessary nutrients required for baby’s development. Read more →

Kids, Clutter and Chaos Part 2: Reducing the clutter

Kids, Clutter and Chaos Part 2: Reducing the clutter – Beverley LifelineDesign

Last month I let you off the hook a little bit by saying it was ‘okay’ to have stuff! I also helped you differentiate between stuff and clutter, and this month we’ll have a look at how to deal with the clutter.

The first step is to stop any more of it coming in to your life, home, handbag and inbox. Put a “No junk mail” sticker on your letter box; don’t bring show bags full of useless brochures home from expos; unsubscribe from promotional emails which you never read; opt for electronic bank statements and bills; etc. The less that comes in, the less you have to deal with, and the easier it is to manage.

In terms of dealing with the clutter that already exists, I strongly believe that there is no “one size fits all” solution to organising. Different things work for different people, so don’t be afraid of trial and error while you figure out what suits you and your personality best. Here are my top 5 tips to help you get started: Read more →

The First Month after Birth…important truths people forget to share

From the minute you conceive or plan to conceive, everyone tells you everything you need to know about pregnancy, labor, and giving birth. At your first visit to the doctor, you receive a giant packet of information about every little change happening to your body and the little one inside you as you progress through your pregnancy. Then when you reach the third trimester you’re told everything there is to know about going into labor and giving birth. However, when your little one enters this world, he doesn’t come with an instruction manual.

Many first-time mums go into the hospital knowing everything there is to know about childbirth, but very few are well informed about what happens next. Important topics like post-partum recovery, breast-feeding, and the unending hunger, sleep deprivation, and fatigue you will feel afterwards are rarely discussed beforehand.

Here are a couple truths about the first month after baby arrives, mums should be prepared for: Read more →

“Has Breastfeeding Become a Pain In the Neck”

Infant Carriers

17 Aug 2012 / 0 Comments / in Life As I Know It/by admin

Need to get out once in a while without the hassle of carrying a stroller? How about the Infant Carrier?

One of the most frustrating things about being home with a young infant is how hard it is to get out. Prams are great for going to the shops or taking long walks, but what about quick errands for which you don’t want to spend half an hour getting everything packed up? Infant carriers are great for chores, short walks, air travel, or going to places where a stroller may not be ideal or allowed.

Most infant carriers are good for babies 3.6 to 11.5 kg and are a life-saver for stay-at-home mums since they allow you to multi-task. Washing the dishes, making a bottle, or putting things away can be a hassle or even impossible if your little one likes to be held constantly. Using an infant carrier allows the baby to feel close to the mum, see new scenes from a different height, and frees up mum’s hands so she can get things done. They are also great for young infants when grocery shopping since infants less than six months cannot sit in the shopping cart and taking a stroller can be a huge hassle. Read more →

Eczema on Babies

06 Aug 2012 / 0 Comments / in Life As I Know It/by admin

What is eczema?

My baby was diagnosed with eczema when he was six months old, but I remember scouring the pharmacy shEczema, Babies Eczemaelves for various types of dry skin relief when he was only a week old!

Eczema (sometimes also known as Dermatitis) is a painful skin condition which looks like a red, often scaly rash and is usually extremely itchy. Often this rash can weep or turn into sores on the skin and it’s not uncommon for infection to occur.

For us, it was at the commonly diagnosed age of six months that I found our baby’s eczema the most challenging. Not only was he scratching incessantly and causing himself damage, he was also keeping us all up both day and night with the constant wakefulness that irritation and scratching causes and not sleeping longer than 15-30 minute intervals. It is an exhausting cycle of overtiredness, which then further impacts on eczema and around and around it continues!
